Allow Saving Your Survey Progress and Finish Later

At the end of this guide

You will have enabled the save-and-resume option on your surveys. Your logged-in customers can save a partially completed survey, leave, and pick up exactly where they left off. You will also know how to tell apart saved drafts from submitted responses in the admin area, and how the Response received trigger behaves.

In this guide

  • Allow saving progress in your survey settings
  • Customers click Save for later to keep a draft
  • Customers resume their draft from Dashboard → Surveys
  • Customers click Submit when they are done
  • Check response statuses in the admin area
  • Know when the Response received trigger fires

Allow saving progress in your survey settings

  1. Go to Contacts → Surveys.
  2. Click the name of your survey.
  3. Click the Settings tab.
  4. Toggle on Allow Saving progress

  5. Click Save changes.

The survey now shows a Save for later button next to the Submit button — but only for logged-in customers. Anonymous visitors never see the button, because there is no way to tie a draft back to them.

How customers save a draft

When a logged-in customer opens your survey, they see two buttons at the bottom: Save for later and Submit.

If they click Save for later:

  • All their answers so far are stored as a draft.
  • Required questions are not enforced — they can save even if they have not filled in everything.
  • Nothing triggers or notifies you. The draft sits quietly until they return.

How customers resume their draft

Customers resume from two places:

  • From the survey link itself. If a logged-in customer returns to the same survey URL, their draft loads automatically with all their previous answers filled in.
  • From their dashboard. Go to Dashboard → Surveys. Any survey with a saved draft shows a yellow Saved for later badge. They click the survey and choose Continue survey to pick up where they left off.

How customers submit their final response

When the customer has finished filling in the survey, they click Submit. At that point:

  • All required-field validations run as normal.
  • The response is marked as submitted with a timestamp.
  • The Response received trigger fires (if you have one set up).

A customer can save and resume as many times as needed. Each save overwrites the previous draft — there is only one draft per customer per survey.

View response statuses on the admin side

  1. Go to Contacts → Surveys and click your survey.
  2. Click the Responses tab.

When the survey has save-and-resume enabled, a Status column appears. Each response shows one of two badges:

Badge Meaning
Submitted (green) The customer clicked Submit. The response has a submission timestamp and is final.
Saved for later (yellow) The customer clicked Save for later but has not submitted yet. The response has no submission timestamp.

Optional: For advanced users

Response received trigger behavior

The Response received trigger fires only on final submission — the moment the submission timestamp transitions from blank to a value:

Action Trigger fires?
Clicking Save for later No
Clicking Submit on the first visit Yes
Returning to a saved draft and clicking Submit Yes

A customer who saves and resumes ten times before submitting triggers nothing until that final Submit click.

Troubleshooting

  • Why can't I see the Save for later button? — Check two things: the Let respondents save their answers and come back later to finish toggle is on in the survey settings, and the customer is logged in. Anonymous visitors never see the button.
  • Why did my trigger not fire when someone saved? — The Response received trigger (and any related automations) only fire on final submission, never on saving a draft. If the customer clicked Save for later but did not submit, the trigger has not fired yet.
  • Why can't my customer find their saved survey? — They need to be logged in to the same account. Direct them to Dashboard → Surveys — drafts appear with a yellow Saved for later badge. Returning to the original survey link also works.
  • Can a customer have multiple drafts of the same survey? — No. Only one draft exists per customer per survey. Each save overwrites the previous one.

Suggested search keywords: save survey progress, save and resume survey, save for later survey, survey draft, continue survey later, survey saved for later badge, survey not submitted, allow saving progress survey, survey resume, incomplete survey
